Dartmouth Hall Dollar Mosaic
Dartmouth Hall
A mosaic illustration of Dartmouth Hall made out of dollar bill pieces. Created for Dartmouth Alumni magazine.
About the artwork
Dartmouth Hall is the landmark building at the heart of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Its white cupola and Georgian facade make it one of the most recognizable images of the college. The present building dates from 1906, after a 1904 fire destroyed the original 1791 hall.
The idea
The story was about money and the college, so the building is not simply drawn in dollar bills. It is assembled from them. Fragments of US banknotes are cut, rotated and placed so that their green tones and engraved line work build the facade, windows, roof and sky.
Technique
An algorithmic mosaic: custom software places each banknote fragment by tone and detail, so the image reads as a recognizable building from a distance and as currency up close. It belongs to our algorithmic mosaic work for editorial clients.
